How to find the sweet spot on your driver or putter
January 3rd, 2007How to find the sweet spot on your driver or putter
The “sweet spot” is a term that is continually misused by everyone in the golf industry. Technically the actual sweet spot (officially known as the Center of Gravity) is a point that is about the size of the sharp end of a pin. It can’t get bigger and it can’t get smaller. It just is what it is.
If you hit the exact center of the golf ball on the surface of the clubface directly in front of this tiny spot, the clubhead will recoil straight back and the ball will fly straight and true. Any deviation from this perfect contact , and the head will start to twist and the ball will begin to slide across the face, imparting sidespin to the ball and making it curve.
The problem is that the sweet spot on any given club is usually not in line with where the mark on top of the head indicates. Sometimes there isn’t an alignment. To hit the ball solidly you need to know where the sweet spot is located. Fortunately finding it is simple
Here’s how we do it:
#1 Hold the club ( driver, putter or whatever) by the grip with the fingers of your left hand with the clubface facing you.
#2 Hold a golf ball between the thumb and first finger of your right hand and strike the clubhead with the ball hard enough to drive the clubhead backward. If the club head moves straight back, you are hitting the sweet spot. If it wants to twist in one direction or the other, you are missing the sweet spot. Keep pinging until you find it.
#3 Once you’ve located it you can mark it with a marker pen or just remember where it is. In all likelihood the mark will be off center.
Now for the dilemma. Do you mark it and make the clubhead look a little funny or do you trust your memory. If you’re close to Jim’s and my age it’s a no brainer. YOU MARK IT.
Last month’s trivia winner was Annie Pratt and the drawing winner was Tony Gregorich. This month’s trivia question was given to us from one of our customers. If no one guesses it the customer will get the gift certificates and in the future anyone can submit a question to try and stump everyone else. Now for the question. Tiger Woods won 3 U.S. Amateurs in a row. Name the other two golfers who accomplished this. The first correct answer gets a a $25 gift cert and all other correct answers will be put in the drawing for another cert.
